About this course

Broken sleep is one of the hardest parts of life with a new baby. Newborns are meant to wake often, so this course does not promise to make your baby sleep through. Instead, it helps you, the parent, cope: getting a protected block of sleep, making the most of the bits in between, and staying safe on the nights when you are running on empty.

You will learn how newborn sleep works, check your baby's sleep setup against the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe sleep advice, build a night-shift schedule with your partner or helpers, plan daytime naps, and use simple habits, food, drinks and daylight to support your energy. You will also learn how to tell normal tiredness from signs that you need more support, and who to call.

It is for moms, dads, partners, single parents and grandparents helping with a new baby, from the first days at home through the first year. Every tool saves to your account, so you can plan and review together.

Questions about this course

Will this course get my baby to sleep through the night?

No, and we would be wary of anything that promises that. Newborns are meant to wake often. This course helps you cope: sharing nights, protecting your own sleep and keeping your baby safe. For questions about your baby's sleep, talk to your baby's pediatrician.

Can a night-shift schedule work if I am breastfeeding?

Yes. Your partner or helper can bring the baby to you, then change, burp and settle them so you can go straight back to sleep. They can also take the first shift after the bedtime feed so you get an early night. Talk to a lactation consultant or your baby's pediatrician before introducing bottles.

I am a single parent. Is this course for me?

Yes. There is a lesson on protecting sleep without a second adult in the house, using family, friends, early nights and daytime help.

Is it safe to share a bed with my baby?

The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend bed-sharing. It says the safest place for your baby to sleep is their own crib or bassinet in your room, ideally for at least the first 6 months. The risk is much higher if you or your partner smoke, have drunk alcohol, used drugs or taken drowsy medicines, are extremely tired, or if your baby was premature or low birthweight. Module 2 covers this in detail.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 15 short lessons (about 1 hour 45 minutes in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Night-shift sharing schedule, Nap and rest planner and Parent sleep log. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: $19.99 (before any sales tax).
