About this course

Poor sleep affects your mood, energy, concentration and how well you cope with life. Yet most advice is a list of tips that never gets to the root of why you are lying awake. This course explains how sleep really works, then helps you find and change the habits that matter most for you.

You will keep a two-week sleep diary, work out your sleep efficiency, and learn the habits used in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), the approach US expert guidelines recommend first for long-term insomnia, explained as everyday education: a fixed wake-up time, the 'get up and reset' habit, a proper wind-down, worry time and relaxation. You will also set up your bedroom, rethink caffeine, alcohol and screens, and use daytime light and activity to help your nights.

It is for adults who sleep poorly, wake in the night or wake too early, and want a practical, step-by-step plan. A when-to-see-a-doctor checker helps you spot signs of sleep apnea, restless legs and other problems that need a health professional, so you know when habits are not enough.

Questions about this course

Is this course a treatment for insomnia?

No. It is education about sleep and healthy sleep habits. It explains the ideas behind CBT for insomnia, which US expert guidelines recommend first for long-term insomnia, but it is not a treatment program. If poor sleep has lasted for months or affects your daily life, talk to your doctor.

How long before I notice a difference?

Everyone is different. Many people notice some change within two to four weeks of using the habits steadily, and sleep can feel a little worse in the first week before it improves. Keep your diary going so you can see gradual progress.

I work shifts. Will this course still help?

Yes. Module 3 covers shift work, and most of the habits, such as protecting your main sleep, a wind-down, a dark and quiet bedroom and careful caffeine timing, work on any schedule. Talk to your doctor if shift work is seriously affecting your sleep or health.

Can I take sleeping pills or melatonin alongside the course?

This course does not recommend any medicine. In the US, melatonin is sold over the counter as a dietary supplement, and the amount in a product can differ from the label; sleeping pills are usually prescribed only for a short time. Do not start, stop or change any medicine or supplement without talking to your doctor or pharmacist.

What do I get with this course?

10 modules with 28 short lessons (about 4 hours 30 minutes in total) and 7 interactive tools, including the Two-week sleep diary, Sleep efficiency calculator and Wind-down routine planner. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: $29.99 (before any sales tax).
