"I always mess things up." "They must think I am useless." "What if it all goes wrong?" Everyone has thoughts like these. When they come often, they can leave you anxious, low or stuck, even when the facts do not back them up.
This self-help course teaches practical skills that come from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a talking therapy widely used for anxiety and depression in New Zealand. You will learn to spot twelve common thinking traps, catch the 'hot thought' behind a strong feeling, weigh up the evidence and write a balanced thought you can actually believe. You will also learn simple ways to test predictions, handle worry that goes round in circles and quieten a harsh inner critic.
It is for adults dealing with everyday stress, worry and self-criticism. It is self-help, not therapy, and it clearly explains when and where to get more support, including your GP, 1737 and Lifeline. A thought record sheet, a thinking traps checker, a balanced thought worksheet and printable question cards help you practise every day.
Learn why the same event can feel very different depending on what you tell yourself, and what this self-help course can and cannot do.

Reframing Unhelpful Thoughts, 6 modules, completed 6 October 2026
No. It teaches self-help skills that come from CBT, such as thought records and spotting thinking traps. CBT therapy is delivered by a trained practitioner, who assesses you and tailors the approach. In New Zealand, your GP can talk with you about counselling, a psychologist or free brief support at your practice.
No, and that is not the aim. Everyone has negative thoughts. The course helps you notice unhelpful ones, check them against the facts and respond in a more balanced way, so they have less power over how you feel and what you do.
Many people find self-help useful while waiting, but please tell your GP or the service how you are, especially if things get worse. If you are already having therapy, check with your therapist how this course fits with what you are doing.
No. Positive thinking can feel fake and is easy to dismiss. A balanced thought takes all the facts into account, including real problems, and is something you can actually believe.
