About this course

Most couples love each other and still end up in the same arguments, about housework, money, phones or family, again and again. Usually the problem is not the topic but how the conversation goes. This course teaches the everyday communication skills that help couples talk without it turning into a fight.

You will find your own communication style under stress, learn to listen so your partner feels heard, start difficult topics gently, turn complaints into clear requests, take breaks that work and repair after a row. Then you will plan the conversations you have been avoiding and set up a 20-minute weekly check-in to keep things on track. Four practical tools, a style checker, speaker-listener cards, weekly check-in prompts and a difficult conversation planner, save to your account and print as PDFs.

The course is for any couple, married or not, living together or apart, at any stage. You can take it together or on your own; when one person changes how they talk and listen, conversations usually change too. It is not for relationships where someone feels afraid or controlled; the course explains where to get confidential help instead.

Who this course is for

  • Couples who keep having the same arguments and want to break the pattern
  • Couples who feel they have drifted into talking only about logistics
  • Anyone who goes quiet, gets defensive or loses their temper in disagreements and wants to change
  • Couples facing a big decision or change, such as moving, money pressures or caring for a parent
  • Partners who want to work on communication on their own when the other person is not ready to join in

Check with a health professional first if

  • If you feel afraid of your partner, or they control, threaten, belittle or hurt you, this course is not the right starting point. Raising difficult topics could put you at more risk. Talk to a domestic abuse helpline in confidence first (see When to get help).
  • If either of you is struggling with low mood, anxiety, heavy drinking or drug use, talk to your GP as well. These can make communication much harder and there is support available.
  • If you are in the middle of a crisis, such as just discovering an affair or deciding to separate, consider a trained relationship counsellor alongside this course.

Questions about this course

Do we both need to take the course?

It works best if you both do it, but it still helps if only one of you does. When one person changes how they start conversations, listen and take breaks, the other person usually responds differently too.

How is this different from couples counselling?

This course teaches everyday communication skills you practise at home. Couples counselling gives you a trained professional to help with deeper or long-running problems. Many couples use both, and the course explains when counselling might help.

We argue a lot. Is this course right for us?

Yes, if you both feel safe with each other. Start with the modules on spotting when a talk is heating up, taking breaks and repair. If either of you feels afraid of the other, or there is control, threats or violence, please contact a domestic abuse helpline such as Women's Aid or Men's Aid Ireland instead; the course lists them.

How long does each tool take?

The Communication Style Checker takes about 5 minutes, the weekly check-in about 20 minutes a week, the speaker-listener cards are used during a 15 to 30 minute conversation, and the Difficult Conversation Planner takes about 15 minutes to fill in before a big talk.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 18 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Communication Style Checker, Speaker-Listener Cards and Weekly Couple Check-In. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: €19.99.
