The weeks after birth are a time of healing, broken sleep and learning to care for a new baby. Eating well can easily slip, just when your body needs it most. This course shows you how to eat regularly and well with very little time, energy or free hands.
You will learn what New Zealand's Eating and Activity Guidelines mean for new mums, how to top up iron after blood loss, the New Zealand advice on iodine while breastfeeding and on vitamin D for you and your baby, and what New Zealand guidance says about caffeine, alcohol and fish if you are breastfeeding. Then you will build a one-handed snack list, plan easy meals, stock a freezer stash and organise help from your partner, whānau and friends.
It is for anyone who is pregnant and planning ahead or has had a baby in the last year, whether you breastfeed, formula feed or both. There are no kilojoule or calorie targets or weight-loss plans. This is about recovery, energy and realistic everyday eating.
Understand what your body is doing in the weeks after birth, how New Zealand's Eating and Activity Guidelines support recovery and energy, and why this is not the time to diet.

Yes. Your own nutrition matters just as much. Everything about recovery, iron, fibre, hydration, snacks and freezer meals applies to you. Always make up your baby's formula exactly as the tin and Health New Zealand guidance describe.
If you are breastfeeding, the Ministry of Health advises a 150 microgram iodine tablet every day, which is funded on prescription. Vitamin D is only advised for people at higher risk of low levels, so ask your midwife or GP. Most other nutrients can come from a varied diet. Check with your GP or pharmacist before taking anything else.
