"Calorie deficit" is one of the most searched phrases about weight, and one of the most misunderstood. This course explains in plain English what a deficit is, why the scale jumps around, and why slow and steady works better than crash diets.
You will check first whether a deficit is right for you, estimate your energy needs, and learn what US public health guidance says about a gradual rate of weight loss: about 1 to 2 pounds a week. Then you will build filling, balanced meals in line with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030, plan easy swaps, read Nutrition Facts labels, handle eating out and alcohol, and track progress without becoming obsessed with numbers.
It is for adults who want to understand weight management and make gradual, realistic changes. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for under-18s, or for anyone with a low BMI or a history of eating disorders, and it gives no personal calorie targets.
Understand energy balance in plain English, why the scale move up and down, and which popular beliefs about calories are myths.

Calorie Deficit Explained, 6 modules, completed October 6, 2026
No. The course explains how to estimate your energy needs and what national guidance says about a safe deficit, so you can understand your own situation. It does not set personal targets. If you have a health condition or are unsure what is safe for you, ask your doctor or nurse practitioner.
We cannot say, and nobody honestly can. Everyone's body is different. The CDC says people who lose weight gradually and steadily are more successful at keeping it off, and some weeks will show no change at all.
The general healthy eating information may be useful, but please talk to your prescriber, doctor or pharmacist first. The course does not give advice about weight-loss medicines, and the energy calculator will point you to your prescriber instead of giving an estimate.
This course is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. US guidance focuses on healthy eating and healthy weight gain in pregnancy, not dieting. Please talk to your OB-GYN, midwife or doctor. Our pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrition courses may suit you better.
