Relationship courses for couples building a stronger team

Practical tools for everyday communication, fairer arguments and rebuilding trust, so you can face the hard parts of life together.

  • 10 courses
  • Tools in every course
  • Certificate included

Every couple disagrees. What matters is how you argue and how you repair afterwards. Small habits, such as a weekly check-in, taking a break before a row escalates and saying thank you for everyday things, make a real difference over time. Pressures common in New Zealand households, such as money, long work hours, shared or multi-generational homes and the expectations of wider whānau, are all covered in the courses.

The courses use structured exercises you do together or on your own: listening without interrupting, describing a problem without blame, agreeing ground rules for arguments and making a plan when trust has been broken. They are education, not couples counselling. If you want face-to-face support, the government's Family Services Directory lists counselling and relationship services near you.

These courses are written for relationships where both people feel safe. If you are afraid of your partner, or one of you controls, threatens or hurts the other, the right help is specialist support rather than a communication course. The courses are written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.

Choosing a relationship course

What the relationship tools do

  • Relationship health check and communication style checker: where you are now, and how each of you tends to talk.
  • Weekly check-in template: fifteen minutes of structured catch-up once a week.
  • Conflict cool-down plan and fair-argument rules card: agreed steps for pausing and returning.
  • Repair conversation script and argument tracker: how to make up well, and which topics keep coming back.
  • Boundary planner, couple agreement and transparency agreement: decisions written down so you both remember them.

When it is more than ordinary conflict

These are signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship, not a communication problem:

  • your partner controls your money, phone, clothes or who you see
  • you feel scared of how they will react, or change what you do to avoid their anger
  • they push, hit, threaten or pressure you into sex
  • they put you down, check up on you constantly or cut you off from whānau and friends

If you are in danger now, call 111. You can also find free, confidential family violence services through the Are You OK website. For stress or low mood, free call or text 1737 at any time.

Relationship courses: your questions

Do we both need to take the course?

It works best when you both take part, but one person can still learn useful skills and change how conversations go. Many exercises are written so you can try them on your own first.

Is this the same as couples counselling?

No. The courses teach skills and give you structured exercises, but they are not counselling. If you would like a counsellor, the Family Services Directory lists services across New Zealand.

We live with extended whānau. Is there help for that?

Yes. The in-law boundaries course looks at shared and multi-generational homes, and how to agree as a couple before you talk to wider family.

Can a course help after an affair?

The trust course gives a structured plan for both partners and helps you decide whether counselling would help. It does not tell you whether to stay together; that is your decision.

What if my relationship is not safe?

Then a communication course is not the right tool. Call 111 if you are in danger, and visit the Are You OK website to find free, confidential family violence support.

What if we are separating?

If you have children, the parenting topic includes a co-parenting course, and the Ministry of Justice explains free family justice services such as Parenting Through Separation.
