Maybe your mom has had a fall, your dad's mail is piling up, or you just have a feeling that things are getting harder for them. This course helps you turn that worry into a calm, practical plan, with your parent involved every step of the way.
You will learn how to spot changes early, how to raise the subject kindly, how to find local help through your parent's Area Agency on Aging, and how the main care and housing options compare. You will also learn the basics of how care is paid for in the US, including what Medicare does and does not cover and how Medicaid works, which benefits are often missed, how to get more from appointments and hospital discharge, and how to plan ahead with powers of attorney and advance directives.
Along the way you will build a needs checklist, a care options comparison sheet, an appointments log and a family responsibilities planner. The course is for adult children, stepchildren, nieces, nephews and anyone supporting an older relative, whether you live next door or across the country.

Supporting an Aging Parent, 7 modules, completed October 6, 2026
Yes. Module 1 covers how to raise the subject gently, why respecting their choices matters, and how to keep the door open. Many parents accept help later, especially when they feel involved. If you think your parent is at serious risk and may not understand that risk, the course explains who to talk to.
It covers the main national programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid, the Eldercare Locator and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Many rules, including Medicaid eligibility, powers of attorney, assisted living and paid family leave, differ by state, so the course explains the main ideas and tells you where to check the rules for your parent's state.
No. It gives general information about care funding, benefits and planning documents, and points you to official sources such as Medicare.gov, Medicaid.gov, your state Medicaid office and the Eldercare Locator. For decisions about money, property or wills, get independent advice, such as from an elder law attorney.
Yes. Module 6 is all about sharing the load, including the important jobs that can be done from a distance, building a local network and planning visits with a purpose.
7 modules with 20 short lessons (about 2 hours 15 minutes in total) and 5 interactive tools, including the Needs checklist, Care options comparison sheet and Appointments log.
