Falls are common in later life, but they are not an unavoidable part of getting older. Most falls happen because of a mix of things that can be changed: weaker legs, rusty balance, a medicine that causes dizziness, a dark hallway or a pair of worn slippers. This course shows you how to work on each of them, one small step at a time.
You will walk around the home with a room-by-room hazard checklist, learn a 20-minute strength and balance routine using the kitchen counter and a chair, and find out which health checks matter, from eyes and feet to a medication review. You will also learn how to get up safely from a fall, what to do if you cannot, and how to prepare for a useful conversation with your doctor.
It is written for older adults who want to stay independent, and for sons, daughters, spouses and friends who want to help someone they love. It is general education based on CDC falls prevention advice and the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, and works alongside, not instead of, care from your doctor or physical therapist.
Understand how common falls are, the main reasons they happen, and why many falls can be prevented with small, steady changes.

No. You need supportive shoes, a sturdy kitchen counter or heavy chair to hold, and a firm chair with arms. The step-up exercise uses the bottom stair with a handrail.
Yes, but please also book a doctor's appointment and say you have fallen. Your doctor can look for causes and may refer you to physical therapy or a falls prevention program. If you are already working with a physical therapist, follow their exercise plan first.
Ask your doctor about an occupational therapy home safety evaluation, and call your Area Agency on Aging (through the Eldercare Locator, 1-800-677-1116) about local home modification programs. Medicare covers some prescribed medical equipment but often not grab bars or medical alert services; programs and costs vary by state and county.
