Falls are common in later life, but they are not an unavoidable part of getting older. Most falls happen because of a mix of things that can be changed: weaker legs, rusty balance, a medicine that causes dizziness, a dark landing or a pair of worn slippers. This course shows you how to work on each of them, one small step at a time.
You will walk round the home with a room-by-room hazard checklist, learn a 20-minute strength and balance routine using the kitchen worktop and a chair, and find out which health checks matter, from eyes and feet to a medicines review. You will also learn how to get up safely from a fall, what to do if you cannot, and how to prepare for a useful conversation with your GP.
It is written for older adults who want to stay independent, and for sons, daughters, partners and friends who want to help someone they love. It is general education based on HSE, Department of Health and Every Move Counts guidance, and works alongside, not instead of, care from your GP, physiotherapist or local falls service.
Understand how common falls are, the main reasons they happen, and why many falls can be prevented with small, steady changes.
When to see your GP checker
Use a simple walk-round to spot and fix the hazards behind many falls at home, from stairs and bathrooms to the route to the toilet at night.

Yes, and that is the best way. The course includes tips for talking about falls without taking away someone's independence, and the tools save progress so you can work through them side by side or on a video call.
No. You need supportive shoes, a sturdy kitchen worktop or heavy chair to hold, and a firm chair with arms. The step-up exercise uses the bottom stair with a handrail.
Yes, but please also book a GP appointment and say you have fallen. The GP can look for causes and may refer you to a local falls service or strength and balance programme. If you are already under a physiotherapist or falls team, follow their exercise plan first.
Everyone is different, and this course does not promise a particular result. Research programmes that reduce falls usually run for several months, so the key is doing your routine on at least three days a week and keeping it going. Many people notice they feel more confident before they notice changes in strength.
6 modules with 16 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Home falls hazard checklist, Balance exercise cards and Falls diary. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: €17.99.
