About this course

Getting older does not have to mean slowing down. This course brings together the everyday habits that matter most for staying well and independent in later life: moving more, keeping strong and steady, eating and drinking well, looking after your brain, sleep and mood, staying connected, using the free screening and vaccines you are offered, and planning ahead.

Each module is based on official Irish guidance, including Every Move Counts (the National Physical Activity Guidelines for Ireland), the Food Pyramid for adults aged 65 and over, the HSE low-risk alcohol guidelines and HSE advice, explained in plain English with real-life examples. You will build a personal plan using five practical tools: a healthy ageing self-check, an activity planner, a meal planner, a social connection planner and a health appointments tracker.

The course is for adults in their sixties, seventies and beyond who want to stay active and in charge of their lives, and for people approaching later life who want to prepare. It is general education, not medical advice, and it tells you clearly when to talk to your GP.

Questions about this course

I am in my eighties and not very active. Is this course too late for me?

No. Muscles, balance and fitness respond to activity at any age, and the course shows you how to start from wherever you are, with small, safe steps. If you have a health condition or have fallen recently, check with your GP before increasing activity.

Will this course tell me which supplements or medicines to take?

No. It explains the Department of Health public health advice on vitamin D for older adults and encourages medicine reviews, but it does not recommend treatments or doses. Your GP and pharmacist can advise on what is right for you.

Is this course written for Ireland?

Yes. It uses Every Move Counts, the Food Pyramid for over-65s, the HSE low-risk alcohol guidelines and HSE services in the Republic of Ireland. Screening ages, vaccine eligibility and schemes change from time to time, so the course tells you where to check the current details. Northern Ireland uses different guidance and services, so this edition is for the Republic of Ireland.

Can I take the course on behalf of an older relative?

Yes. Many family members use it to understand what helps and to support a parent or grandparent. The tools can be filled in together. If your relative has a poor appetite or memory problems, our more focused courses may also help.

What do I get with this course?

9 modules with 27 short lessons (about 4 hours 30 minutes in total) and 5 interactive tools, including the Healthy ageing self-check, Weekly activity planner and Healthy ageing meal planner. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: €22.99. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition, using HSE and Irish national guidance.
