Food does an important job in later life. It helps you keep your muscles and bones strong, recover from illness and stay independent for longer. But appetite, taste, thirst, teeth and daily routines can all change as we get older, and it is easy to eat less than your body needs without noticing.
This course takes you through the Food Pyramid for adults aged 65 and over, protein at every meal, calcium and vitamin D for bones, drinks and fibre, and simple, affordable meals for one or two. You will learn the warning signs of malnutrition, check yourself with a simple risk checker, and know exactly when to talk to your GP.
It is written for adults in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond who live at home and want practical, realistic ways to eat well, and for family members who want to understand the basics. It is general education, not a personal diet plan.
Understand what changes in your body and daily life as you get older, how the Food Pyramid for over-65s applies, and the key Irish numbers worth knowing.

No. It is general education about eating well in later life, based on Irish national guidance from the Department of Health, the HSE and the FSAI. It does not set calorie or weight targets. If you need personal advice, your GP can refer you to a dietitian.
Yes, but please also book a GP appointment. Weight loss you did not plan is always worth checking. The course shows you what to take to the appointment and how to eat well with a small appetite in the meantime.
The main advice in Ireland is that all adults aged 65 and over take 15 micrograms of vitamin D every day, all year round. Most other nutrients can come from food. Check with your GP or pharmacist before taking any supplement, especially if you take other medicines.
Some ideas in this course, such as fortifying food or eating more protein, may not suit everyone with a long-term condition. Please check with your GP, specialist nurse or dietitian before making changes.
