"Calorie deficit" is one of the most searched phrases about weight, and one of the most misunderstood. This course explains in plain English what a deficit is, why the scales jump about, and why slow and steady works better than crash diets.
You will check first whether a deficit is right for you, estimate your energy needs, and learn what widely used guidance says about a safe rate of weight loss: about 0.5 to 1 kg (1 to 2 lb) a week. Then you will build filling, balanced meals based on Canada's Food Guide plate, plan easy swaps, read the Nutrition Facts table and the new "High in" symbol, handle eating out and alcohol, and track progress without becoming obsessed with numbers.
It is for adults who want to understand weight management and make gradual, realistic changes. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for under-18s, or for anyone with a low BMI or a history of eating disorders, and it gives no personal calorie targets.
Understand energy balance in plain English, why the scales move up and down, and which popular beliefs about calories are myths.

Calorie Deficit Explained, 6 modules, completed 6 October 2026
No. The course explains how to estimate your energy needs and what widely used guidance says about a safe deficit, so you can understand your own situation. It does not set personal targets. If you have a health condition or are unsure what is safe for you, ask your family doctor or nurse practitioner, nurse at your clinic or a registered dietitian.
We cannot say, and nobody honestly can. Everyone's body is different. The course explains the gradual, steady rate that widely used guidance describes as safe and realistic for most adults, with some weeks showing no change at all.
The general healthy eating information may be useful, but please talk to your prescriber, family doctor or pharmacist first. The course does not give advice about weight-loss medicines, and the energy calculator will point you to your prescriber instead of giving an estimate.
This course is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Health Canada advises healthy eating, not dieting, in pregnancy. Please talk to your midwife, public health nurse or family doctor. Our pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrition courses may suit you better.
