  • identify the everyday triggers behind your child's behaviour and plan your day to reduce them.
  • keep an ABC behaviour diary and use it to find patterns and the need behind behaviour.
  • respond to common behaviours such as biting, throwing, running off and clinginess with calm, consistent strategies.
  • recognise when to talk to your child and family health nurse or GP about behaviour or development.

About this course

Why does your toddler say no to everything, throw their food, bite at playgroup or cling to your leg at childcare drop-off? This course explains what is going on in a young child's developing brain, what is typical at each stage from about 1 to 4 years, and the everyday triggers that make difficult moments more likely.

You will learn to see behaviour as a message, use an ABC behaviour diary to spot patterns, and check triggers like hunger, tiredness and transitions with a simple trigger checker. A development stage cheat sheet gives you quick reminders of what to expect and what helps, and the course shows you calm, practical ways to respond that teach rather than punish.

It is for parents, grandparents and carers of children aged roughly 1 to 4. It is general education about everyday behaviour and development, and it explains clearly when to talk to your child and family health nurse or GP.

Questions about this course

What age is this course for?

It covers children from about 12 months to 4 years. Ages are rough guides, and the ideas can be adapted for children who are a little younger or older.

How is this different from the Handling Toddler Tantrums course?

This course is about understanding behaviour in general: development stages, triggers and the needs behind behaviours like biting, throwing, running off and clinginess. The tantrums course focuses on preventing and handling tantrums in detail.

Will this course tell me if my child has a developmental problem?

No. It explains what is typical and lists signs that are worth discussing with your child and family health nurse or GP, but it cannot assess your child. If you are worried, contact your child and family health nurse at any time.

Why is a nutrition specialist the author of a parenting course?

Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition, authors and reviews MyNutriCare courses, including the parts on mealtimes, snacks, routines and everyday triggers like hunger. Development and support information comes from official Australian sources listed on the course page.
