About this course

Tantrums are one of the most common parts of life with a toddler, and one of the most exhausting. This course explains why they happen, based on Australian child health guidance about toddler development, and gives you a clear, calm plan for before, during and after a tantrum.

You will learn how to spot your child's triggers, use regular meals, snacks, sleep and routines to prevent many meltdowns, and respond in the moment without shouting or giving in. You will also cover hitting, biting and breath-holding, tantrums in public, getting all carers on the same page, and when to talk to your child and family health nurse or GP.

Four practical tools help you put it into action: a Tantrum tracker, a Trigger checker, printable In-the-moment response cards and a one-page Prevention plan to share with everyone who cares for your child. It is written for parents, grandparents and carers of children aged about 1 to 4.

Questions about this course

What age is this course for?

It is written for parents and carers of children aged about 1 to 4, when tantrums are most common. Many ideas also help with older children who still find big feelings hard to manage.

Will this course stop my child's tantrums?

Tantrums are a normal part of development, so no course can stop them completely. What the course gives you is a clear plan to understand your child's triggers, prevent many tantrums and respond calmly to the rest. Many parents find tantrums become shorter and less frequent with a consistent approach, but every child is different.

Is it all right to ignore a tantrum?

The course explains a calm middle path: you do not give in to what was refused, and you do not give lots of attention to the behaviour, but you stay close, keep your child safe and reconnect once they calm down.

When should I worry about my toddler's tantrums?

Talk to your child and family health nurse or GP if tantrums are very frequent or getting worse, continue often after about age 4, involve your child hurting themselves or others, or come with worries about speech, hearing, development or lost skills. Module 6 covers this in detail.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 16 short lessons (about 1 hour 50 minutes in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Tantrum tracker, Trigger checker and In-the-moment response cards, for a one-off A$27.99 (GST included). Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate of completion. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
