Broken sleep is one of the hardest parts of life with a new baby. Newborns are meant to wake often, so this course does not promise to make your baby sleep through. Instead, it helps you, the parent, cope: getting a protected block of sleep, making the most of the bits in between, and staying safe on the nights when you are running on empty.
You will learn how newborn sleep works, check your baby's sleep set-up against New Zealand safe sleep advice, build a night-shift roster with your partner or helpers, plan daytime naps, and use simple habits, food, drinks and daylight to support your energy. You will also learn how to tell normal tiredness from signs that you need more support, and who to call.
It is for mums, dads, partners, single parents, grandparents and wider whānau helping with a new baby, from the first days at home through the first year. Every tool saves to your account, so you can plan and review together.
Understand how newborn sleep works, why frequent waking is normal, and what broken sleep does to you, so you can plan for it rather than fight it.

Sleep for New Parents, 6 modules, completed 6 October 2026
No, and we would be wary of anything that promises that. Newborns are meant to wake often. This course helps you cope: sharing nights, protecting your own sleep and keeping your baby safe. For questions about your baby's sleep, talk to your Well Child Tamariki Ora nurse (such as your Plunket nurse).
Yes. Your partner or helper can bring the baby to you, then change, wind and settle them so you can go straight back to sleep. They can also take the first shift after the bedtime feed so you get an early night. Talk to your midwife or Well Child Tamariki Ora nurse (such as your Plunket nurse) before introducing bottles.
Yes. There is a lesson on protecting sleep without a second adult in the house, using family, friends, early nights and daytime help.
New Zealand advice is that babies should always sleep in their own baby bed, in your room. If you want your baby in your bed, a wahakura or pēpi-pod gives them their own safe space. Sharing an adult bed directly is especially dangerous if you or your partner smoke, have drunk alcohol, taken drugs or drowsy medicines, are extremely tired, or if your baby was premature or low birthweight. Module 2 covers this in detail.
6 modules with 15 short lessons (about 1 hour 45 minutes in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Night-shift sharing roster, Nap and rest planner and Parent sleep log, for a one-off NZ$29.99 (GST included). Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate of completion. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
