About this course

Everyone gets angry. The trouble starts when anger comes too often, too strongly, or in ways that hurt you or the people around you. This practical self-help course shows you how anger works, what sets yours off, and how to step in before it boils over.

You will keep an anger log, learn your personal early warning signs, practice quick calming skills, write a time-out plan you can actually use, and learn to say what you need with calm 'I' statements. You will also look at the everyday things that shorten your fuse, such as poor sleep, hunger, alcohol and stress, and where to get support in the US.

It is for adults who want to handle everyday anger better at home, at work, on the road or with their children. It is self-help education, not treatment. If you have hurt or frightened a partner or family member, the course points you to specialist help, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Check with a health professional first if

  • If you have hurt, threatened or frightened a partner or family member, or you control what they do, this course is not enough on its own. Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788) for free, confidential help first. Its advocates also talk with people who are worried about their own behavior.
  • If you are worried you might hurt a child, put the child somewhere safe, step away and get support now from your doctor, your child's pediatrician or the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-422-4453).
  • If you feel low, anxious or unable to cope most days for two weeks or more, or your anger is linked to drinking or drug use, talk to your doctor alongside this course.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, get help now: call 911 in an emergency, or call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (988).
  • If you are living with someone whose anger frightens you, please use the domestic abuse helplines in the 'When to get help' section instead.
  • If your anger has changed suddenly, for example after a head injury, a new medicine or alongside memory problems, see your doctor.

Questions about this course

Is this an anger management course I can use for court or work?

No. This is a self-help education course to help you understand and manage everyday anger. It is not a formal anger management program or a domestic violence intervention program, and the certificate shows that you completed the learning, not that you have been assessed. If you need a formal program, ask the court, your employer or the organization requesting it which programs they accept.

I've hurt my partner when angry. Is this course right for me?

This course alone is not the right help. Hurting, threatening or controlling a partner is domestic abuse, which needs specialist support. Please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (or text START to 88788) for free, confidential advice about changing your behavior. You can still use the calming skills here alongside that support.

Will this course stop me getting angry?

No, and it shouldn't. Anger is a normal emotion. The course helps you notice anger earlier, calm down faster and respond in ways you won't regret. Most people find it takes several weeks of practice to see a difference.

Can I do this course if I have a mental health condition?

The skills here are general and may be useful, but please talk to your doctor or the professional who supports you, as they can advise what fits with your care. If you feel low, anxious or unable to cope, or think about harming yourself, use the support in the 'When to get help' section.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 16 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Anger log, Early warning signs checker and Time-out plan. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: $22.99 (before any sales tax). Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition. General education, not personal medical or nutrition advice.
