Check with a health professional first if

  • If you have diabetes, epilepsy, celiac disease, a food allergy or another health condition, follow the advice of your family doctor, obstetrician, midwife or specialist team as well as this course
  • Some people need a higher dose of folic acid than the 0.4 mg in a standard multivitamin, for example because of a health condition, a medicine or a family history of neural tube defects: ask your health care provider whether this applies to you
  • If you take any medicines, supplements or herbal remedies, check with your health care provider or pharmacist that they are suitable in pregnancy; do not stop prescribed medicines suddenly
  • If you follow a vegan or very restricted diet, ask your health care provider about nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron and calcium, or ask to see a registered dietitian
  • If you have had, or have, an eating disorder, talk to your health care provider; NEDIC (1-866-633-4220) also offers support
  • If you are being sick so often that you cannot keep food or drink down, contact your health care provider before working through food changes

Questions about this course

How is this different from the Complete Pregnancy Nutrition Course?

This is a short beginner course that covers the essentials in about an hour. The Complete Pregnancy Nutrition Course goes into much more depth across each trimester, activity, special diets and the first weeks after birth.

Do I need to eat for two?

No. Health Canada says you need only a little more food each day in the second and third trimesters, such as an extra snack. The focus is on eating a healthy, varied diet based on Canada's Food Guide.

Which supplements should I take?

Health Canada advises a daily multivitamin with 0.4 mg (400 mcg) of folic acid before, during and after pregnancy while breastfeeding. A prenatal multivitamin should also have 16 to 20 mg of iron. Some people need more folic acid, so ask your health care provider. Do not take a second multivitamin or extra vitamin A.

I did not know I was pregnant and had a few drinks. What should I do?

Try not to worry. Stop drinking now and mention it to your health care provider if you are concerned. There is no known safe amount of alcohol in pregnancy, so the safest choice for the rest of your pregnancy is not to drink.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 12 short lessons (about 1 hour 5 minutes in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Pregnancy plate guide, Daily pregnancy food checklist and Pregnancy supplement tracker. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition. Prices are in Canadian dollars (CAD).
