About this course

"Calorie deficit" is one of the most searched phrases about weight, and one of the most misunderstood. This course explains in plain English what a deficit is, how kilojoules and Calories relate, why the scales jump about, and why slow and steady works better than crash diets.

You will check first whether a deficit is right for you, estimate your energy needs, and learn what Australian health advice says about a safe rate of weight loss: about 0.5 to 1 kg a week. Then you will build filling, balanced meals based on the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, plan easy swaps, read Nutrition Information Panels, handle eating out and alcohol, and track progress without becoming obsessed with numbers.

It is for adults who want to understand weight management and make gradual, realistic changes. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for under-18s, or for anyone with a low BMI or a history of eating disorders, and it gives no personal calorie targets.

Questions about this course

Will this course give me a calorie or kilojoule target?

No. The course explains how to estimate your energy needs and what national guidance says about a safe deficit, so you can understand your own situation. It does not set personal targets. If you have a health condition or are unsure what is safe for you, ask your GP, practice nurse or an Accredited Practising Dietitian.

How much weight will I lose?

We cannot say, and nobody honestly can. Everyone's body is different. The course explains the slow, steady rate that Australian health services describe as safe and realistic for most adults, and some weeks may show no change at all.

Is this course suitable if I am using a weight-loss injection?

The general healthy eating information may be useful, but please talk to your prescriber, GP or pharmacist first. The course does not give advice about weight-loss medicines, and the energy calculator will point you to your prescriber instead of giving an estimate.

Can I do this course if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

This course is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Australian guidance is to eat well, not diet, in pregnancy. Please talk to your midwife, child and family health nurse or GP. Our pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrition courses may suit you better.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 18 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Energy needs calculator, Deficit planner and Calorie counting quick guide, for a one-off A$27.99 (GST included). Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate of completion. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
