Pregnancy Nutrition for Beginners, 6 modules, completed 6 October 2026
This is a short beginner course that covers the essentials in about an hour. The Complete Pregnancy Nutrition Course goes into much more depth across each trimester, activity, special diets and the first weeks after birth.
No. Your energy needs barely change in the first trimester and rise only a little later. The Australian Dietary Guidelines show this as a couple of extra serves a day, such as more grain foods and lean meat or alternatives, not double portions.
Australian advice is at least 400 micrograms of folic acid a day, ideally from 1 to 3 months before conception through the first 3 months of pregnancy, and 150 micrograms of iodine a day throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some women need a higher dose of folic acid prescribed by a GP. Avoid supplements with high-dose vitamin A (retinol). Vitamin D is not routine for everyone; ask your GP whether you need it.
Try not to worry. Stop drinking now and mention it to your GP or midwife if you are concerned. The Australian guidelines say not to drink alcohol for the rest of your pregnancy.
