About this course

The first 6 weeks with a new baby are exciting, exhausting and full of questions. Is this much feeding normal? How many nappies should there be? Is this bleeding OK? When do I call someone? This course gives you clear, calm answers based on Australian health guidance, so you can spend less time worrying and more time getting to know your baby.

You will learn what usually happens week by week, from the newborn checks and midwife visits to the first child and family health nurse visit and the 6 to 8 week checks. It covers responsive feeding, nappies, safe sleep, crying, everyday baby care, your physical recovery and your feelings, with practical tools: a week-by-week checklist, a feed, nappy and sleep log, a visitors plan, a red-flag checker and a prep sheet for your postnatal check.

It is for expectant and new parents, partners and anyone supporting a family in the early weeks. It is general education, not medical advice, and it always points you to your midwife, child and family health nurse, GP, healthdirect (1800 022 222) or 000 (triple zero) when you or your baby need to be seen.

Check with a health professional first if

  • If your baby was born early, small or unwell, spent time in a neonatal intensive care or special care nursery, or has a medical condition, follow the plan from your baby's medical team and child and family health nurse; some general advice here may not apply.
  • If you had a complicated birth, a caesarean, heavy blood loss, or conditions such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes or a blood clot, follow your maternity team's specific discharge advice.
  • If you have a history of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or postpartum psychosis, make sure your midwife, child and family health nurse and GP know, so they can plan extra support.
  • If you take any medicines, including pain relief, check with your GP, midwife or pharmacist that they are suitable after birth and while breastfeeding.
  • If anything in this course worries you about your own baby, contact your midwife, child and family health nurse, GP or healthdirect (1800 022 222) rather than waiting to finish the course. In an emergency, call 000.

Questions about this course

Can I take this course before my baby is born?

Yes. Many parents find it most useful in the last weeks of pregnancy, so they can set up safe sleep, plan visitors and learn the red flags before the baby arrives. You can then use the log, checklist and prep sheet once your baby is here.

Does it cover both breastfeeding and formula feeding?

Yes. Module 2 covers responsive feeding, signs your baby is getting enough, and the basics of breastfeeding, formula feeding and combining both, following Australian guidance. It does not promote any formula or product brands.

Will the course tell me if something is wrong with my baby?

No. The course and the red-flag checker help you recognise warning signs and decide who to contact, but they cannot diagnose. If you are worried, contact your midwife, child and family health nurse, GP or healthdirect (1800 022 222), or call 000 in an emergency.

Does it apply in every state and territory?

Yes. The guidance on feeding, safe sleep, recovery and red flags applies across Australia. Some services and details differ between states and territories, such as the name of your baby's health record book, the schedule of child health checks and how you register the birth, so the course points you to your local service. 000 and healthdirect (1800 022 222) work everywhere, although Victoria and Queensland also have their own nurse lines.
