Where would you like to give birth? What helps you cope with pain? What would you like if your labour needs help? A birth plan helps you think about these questions before labour, and helps your nurses, midwives and doctors understand what matters most to you. This course guides you through every part of it, using information from the Public Health Agency of Canada and how maternity care usually works in Canada.
Across 7 modules you will learn about birth settings, comfort and pain relief, monitoring, induction, assisted and cesarean birth, and your baby's first hours, including skin-to-skin, cord clamping, the placenta, vitamin K and the first feed. Then you will write a clear, one-page plan with a Plan B, talk it through with your health care provider and brief your birth partner.
It is for anyone who is pregnant, usually from around 28 weeks, and for birth partners and doulas. Practical tools, including a fillable birth plan, a birth options checklist, questions for your health care provider, a birth partner briefing sheet and decision question cards, help you finish with a plan you feel confident about.
Understand what a birth plan is for, when to write it, and your right to information and choice in Canadian maternity care.

Many people start thinking about it from around 28 weeks. Your health care provider will usually talk with you about labour and birth in the third trimester, often around 34 to 36 weeks, so having a draft ready by then is ideal.

No. The course explains the options usually available in Canada so you can make informed choices with your midwife, family doctor or obstetrician. The best choice depends on your health, your pregnancy, what is offered where you live and what matters to you.
