About this course

If bedtime in your house means stalling, shouting, endless requests or a child who will not stay in bed, you are far from alone. This course shows you how children's sleep works and how to build a short, calm bedtime routine that your child can follow, with a picture chart you make together.

You will learn how to time bedtime around your child's wake-up time, set up the bedroom, plan evening food and drinks, make a screens-off plan the whole family can keep, and handle common battles such as getting out of bed, fears, night waking and early rising, with calm, ready-to-use scripts.

It is for parents and carers of children from about 1 to 11 years in New Zealand. It is practical everyday guidance, not treatment for sleep disorders, and it tells you clearly when to talk to your GP, Well Child Tamariki Ora nurse (such as your Plunket nurse) or public health nurse.

Questions about this course

What age is this course for?

It is mainly for parents and carers of children from about 1 to 11 years. There is a short section on older children and phones. For babies under 1, follow Health New Zealand safe sleep advice and speak to your Well Child Tamariki Ora nurse or PlunketLine.

How long before we see a difference?

Every child is different, but many families notice calmer bedtimes within one to three weeks of using the same routine every night. Things can get a little worse for a few nights first, as children test the new rules.

Does this course use controlled crying?

No. It focuses on gentle, consistent approaches such as a predictable routine, a bedtime pass, the quiet return, gradual withdrawal and checking. You choose what fits your family.

Can I use it if my child has autism or ADHD?

Many of the ideas, especially visual routine charts, can help. But sleep problems are more common in these children, so please also ask your GP, paediatric team or public health nurse for advice tailored to your child.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 18 short lessons (about 1 hour 45 minutes in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Picture bedtime routine chart, Child sleep diary and Screens-off planner, for a one-off NZ$29.99 (GST included). Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate of completion. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
