If you are planning a pregnancy, the supplement aisle can be confusing, and much of what you read online comes from other countries. This course cuts through it. You will learn the simple New Zealand advice: 0.8mg (800 micrograms) of folic acid every day from at least 4 weeks before pregnancy until 12 weeks, a 150 microgram iodine tablet every day in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and vitamin D only if you are at higher risk of low levels, and why the timing matters so much.
You will find out who may need a higher, prescription-only dose of folic acid, how the funded tablets work, how to read a supplement label, which products and ingredients to avoid (such as vitamin A as retinol, fish liver oil and kelp), and what to think about if you are vegetarian or vegan. Practical tools help you check your supplements, track your daily habit and prepare for a GP or pharmacist appointment.
It is for anyone thinking about pregnancy in the next year, their partners, and people who have just found out they are pregnant and want to catch up. It is education based on New Zealand guidance and does not replace advice from your GP, pharmacist or midwife.
Understand why timing matters so much for folic acid, and get a clear overview of what New Zealand advises for everyone planning a pregnancy.

Folic Acid, Iodine and Vitamin D Before Pregnancy, 6 modules, completed 6 October 2026
New Zealand advice is to take 0.8mg (800 micrograms) of folic acid every day from at least 4 weeks before you might get pregnant, and carry on until you are 12 weeks pregnant. If you find out you are pregnant and have not been taking it, start straight away.
The course includes a checker based on the situations in New Zealand guidance, such as a family history of neural tube defects, diabetes or some epilepsy medicines, and a few others your GP may want to check. If any apply, speak to your GP. 5mg folic acid is prescription-only.
Yes. The standard 0.8mg folic acid and 150µg iodine tablets are funded medicines, so your GP, or your midwife once you are pregnant, can prescribe them for the usual prescription co-payment. You can also buy them at a pharmacy.
No. Folic acid, iodine and vitamin D are advised to support a healthy pregnancy, not to improve fertility. If you have been trying for a year, or about 6 months if you are 35 or over, speak to your GP.
