Self-care is not about treats or time you cannot spare. It is the everyday work of protecting your time, energy and health: sleeping enough, moving your body, asking for help and being able to say no without feeling guilty. For many people, especially parents and carers, the hardest part is the last one.

Our first course in this topic focuses on boundaries: what they are and are not, why saying no feels so hard, how to map where your limits are being crossed, and how to hold a boundary calmly when people push back. It includes a boundary map, saying-no scripts for common situations and a practice tracker.

Basic health habits underpin all of this. The HSE advises 7 to 9 hours of sleep for most adults, and Every Move Counts, Ireland's physical activity guidelines, encourages adults to be active for 150 to 300 minutes a week. If you are struggling to cope, talk to your GP or someone you trust.

Where to begin

Start with Learning to Set Boundaries if you often say yes when you mean no, feel stretched thin, or find it hard to ask for what you need. It works for boundaries at home, at work, with friends and with family.

What the self-care tools do

  • Boundary map: lay out the areas of your life, where your limits are being crossed and what you would like instead.
  • Saying-no scripts: short, polite wording for common requests at work, at home and with friends.
  • Practice tracker: record each time you hold a boundary, how it went and what you learned.

When to get support

Boundaries are for ordinary pressures. Talk to your GP if you feel low, anxious or exhausted most days for two weeks or more, or if stress is affecting your sleep, eating or work.

If someone is controlling, threatening or hurting you, that is not a boundary problem you should solve alone. In an emergency, call 112 or 999. Your GP can help you find specialist support.

If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, call Samaritans free on 116 123, text HELLO to 50808, or go to the emergency department.

Self-care courses: your questions

Is setting boundaries selfish?

No. Clear boundaries help relationships last, because people know where they stand and resentment has less room to build. The course shows how to set them kindly.

What if someone gets angry when I say no?

The course covers how to stay calm, repeat your answer without over-explaining and decide what to do next. If someone's reaction makes you feel unsafe, get support.

Does the course work for boundaries at work?

Yes. The boundary map and saying-no scripts cover work as well as home, family and friends.

How long does it take?

About an hour and three quarters in total, split into short lessons. Your place is saved, so you can do a few minutes at a time.

Is the course suitable if I am caring for someone?

Yes. Many carers find boundaries hard. Managing Carer Stress, in the family caregiving topic, covers the wider picture.
