About this course

Caring for a partner, parent, child or friend can be full of love, and also exhausting. This course helps you understand where your stress comes from, spot the warning signs early and use quick, realistic ways to calm things down on a busy caring day.

You will learn how to ask the HSE, your GP and Family Carers Ireland for support, where money and practical help may come from, how to build a support map, and how to plan breaks that actually happen. You will finish with a one-page self-care plan covering food, sleep, movement, boundaries and who to call if things get worse.

It is for adult family carers in Ireland, whether you care full-time, alongside a job, or from a distance. It is general education and signposting, not therapy or medical advice.

Questions about this course

Do I count as a carer if I only help a few hours a week?

Yes. If you regularly help someone who could not manage without you, you are an unpaid carer, whatever the hours. Seeing yourself as a carer helps you ask your GP, the HSE and Family Carers Ireland for support, however many hours you give.

Will this course tell me which carer payments I can get?

It explains the main carer payments and where to find out more, but it does not give advice on your own claim. Rules change with each Budget and payments affect each other, so we show you how to get free information from Citizens Information.

Is this course therapy?

No. It is practical education about stress, support and self-care for carers. If you are struggling with your mental health, please talk to your GP. The course shows you which services can help and when.

Does it work for carers anywhere in Ireland?

Yes. The course is written for carers in the Republic of Ireland and explains HSE services, carer payments from the Department of Social Protection and national helplines. Carers in Northern Ireland have different services.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 18 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 6 interactive tools, including the Carer stress tracker, Respite and breaks planner and My support map. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: €17.99. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition, using HSE and Irish national guidance.
