Self-care and confidence courses that make room for you

Practical courses on boundaries, confidence and personal routines, for people who give a lot to others and want to keep some time and energy for themselves.

Self-care is often sold as bubble baths and pampering. In practice it is more ordinary: getting enough rest, saying no when your week is already full, asking for help, and making time for the people and activities that matter to you. Simple NHS ideas such as connecting with others and learning something new are a good place to begin.

Our self-care courses are hands-on. The boundaries course, for example, helps you map where your limits are being crossed across six areas (time, energy, work, money, personal space and your phone), then practise small steps with ready-made scripts. It is general education about everyday wellbeing and relationships, not counselling.

Some situations need more than better boundaries. If someone close to you controls your money, checks your phone, stops you seeing people or reacts to your limits with threats, that may be domestic abuse, and free, confidential help is available in every part of the UK. At work, Acas gives impartial advice on bullying and unfair treatment.

Where to begin

Learning to Set Boundaries is the place to start if you find it hard to say no, often feel overcommitted, or feel guilty after turning people down. Further courses in this topic cover self-confidence, body confidence, procrastination and personal goal setting, and are added to the list above as they open.

Choose one small boundary to practise this week, such as not answering work messages after a set time. Small, repeated steps usually feel more manageable than one big conversation.

What the self-care tools do

  • People-pleasing self-check: a private set of questions about where saying yes is costing you.
  • Boundary map: your values, limits and needs across the six areas, in one view.
  • Saying-no scripts: words for buying time, saying yes with limits and handling pushback.
  • Practice tracker: log each boundary you try and how confident you felt, so progress is easy to see.

When to get support

If you are in danger, call 999. If speaking would put you at risk, the Silent Solution lets you call 999 from a mobile and press 55 when prompted.

If a partner or family member is controlling, threatening or hurting you, contact the domestic abuse helpline for your nation: the National Domestic Abuse Helpline in England, Scotland's Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage Helpline, Live Fear Free in Wales or the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline in Northern Ireland.

If low mood, anxiety or feeling overwhelmed has gone on for a fortnight or longer, book a GP appointment. In England you can also refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies.

Self-care courses: your questions

Isn't setting boundaries selfish?

No. A boundary is about what you will and will not do, not about controlling anyone else. Clear, kind limits often make relationships easier, because people know where they stand.

Is the boundaries course a kind of counselling?

No. It is general education with practical exercises. If you want to explore deeper patterns with a trained professional, your GP can tell you about talking therapies.

Can I use the scripts at work?

Yes. Several scripts are written for colleagues and managers, such as buying time before agreeing to extra work. For formal problems like bullying, Acas offers free, impartial advice.

What if someone reacts badly when I say no?

The course covers ordinary pushback and guilt. Threats, intimidation or punishment for having limits are different and can be signs of abuse; the help box on this page lists where to turn.

How much time will I need?

The boundaries course takes about 105 minutes in total, in short lessons. Most of the change happens between lessons, as you practise one small step at a time.
