About this course

In-laws can be a wonderful source of love and help. They can also be the cause of tension, arguments and quiet resentment, especially around visits, grandchildren, money and festivals. If you dread family gatherings, or keep arguing with your partner about their family, this course is for you.

You will learn what a healthy boundary is (and is not), how to get on the same page as your partner, and how to turn vague frustrations into clear, kind requests. You will plan your boundaries area by area, practise warm-but-firm conversations with ready-made scripts, and handle reactions such as guilt, tears and anger. Practical lessons cover visits and stays, grandparents and children's food and safety, money and gifts, and sharing festivals across different families and traditions.

It is for couples, married or not, at any stage, including those living with or caring for in-laws. It respects that families and cultures differ, and focuses on what works for the two of you. It also explains how to recognise when behaviour goes beyond a boundary issue, and where to get confidential help.

Questions about this course

Will setting boundaries damage my relationship with my in-laws?

Done kindly and consistently, boundaries usually make relationships calmer and closer, because resentment stops building up. There may be some hurt or push-back at first. The course shows you how to handle this, repair, and keep things warm.

What if my partner does not want to set boundaries with their family?

This is very common. The course helps you talk about it without blame, understand why it feels hard for them, and agree something you can both live with. If you keep getting stuck, relationship counselling can help.

We live with my in-laws. Is this course still for us?

Yes. Living together needs even clearer agreements about space, costs, chores and time as a couple. The course includes examples and a couple agreement that works for shared homes, and respects that multigenerational living is normal in many families.

Does this course help if my in-laws are abusive?

The course explains how to recognise controlling or abusive behaviour and where to get confidential help. If you are being abused, do not use the conversation techniques with the person. Contact a domestic abuse helpline or, in an emergency, call 999.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 17 short lessons (about 1 hour 50 minutes in total) and 3 interactive tools, including the In-law boundary planner, In-law conversation scripts and Our couple agreement on family boundaries. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
