Going back to work does not have to mean stopping breastfeeding. This course walks you through the choices parents in Ireland make, from expressing at work to feeding around your hours, and helps you pick the approach that suits your baby, your job and you.
You will learn what Irish law and official guidance say about breastfeeding at work, plan a confident conversation with your employer, get comfortable with expressing, and follow safe, cautious rules for storing, carrying, thawing and warming breast milk. You will build your own pumping schedule, a small freezer stash and clear instructions for your childcare provider.
It is for breastfeeding parents planning a return to work or study, and for partners and family who want to help. It also covers looking after yourself, spotting early signs of problems such as mastitis, and changing your plan kindly when you need to.
Look at the different ways families keep breastfeeding after a return to work, and how your milk supply responds when you and your baby are apart.

Returning to Work While Breastfeeding, 6 modules, completed 6 October 2026
No. Many parents carry on, by expressing at work, feeding around their working hours, or mixing breast milk and formula. The HSE advises carrying on alongside solid food, for 2 years or more if you can, so any breast milk still counts.
Once you tell your employer in writing that you are breastfeeding, they must look at risks to you and your baby. Irish law also gives breastfeeding employees paid breastfeeding breaks, or a paid reduction in working hours, for a set period. Your employer may not have to create a special room, but a private, clean space that is not a toilet is good practice. The course explains this in plain English and helps you make a request.
As a cautious guide, up to 5 days in a fridge at 4°C or lower. If the fridge is warmer, or you do not know its temperature, use the milk within 3 days. A cool bag with ice packs keeps cooled milk safe for up to 24 hours on your journey home.
Less than you might think. Most parents express today for tomorrow, so a stash of about a day or two of feeds plus a few small emergency bags is usually plenty. The freezer stash planner helps you build it gently.
