About this course

When someone you love starts to need more help, the caring often lands on one person, the information lives in one head, and everyone else is not quite sure what to do. This course walks you through building a simple family care plan: what the person needs day to day, what matters to them, who in the family does what, which official support you can ask for, and what happens if things go wrong.

You will fill in four practical tools as you go: a care plan template, a roles and rota planner, a key contacts sheet and an emergency information sheet. Each one saves to your account and prints as a PDF, so you can share it with family, keep a copy by the phone and take it to appointments.

It is written for adult children, partners, siblings and friends caring for an older parent or a relative with a long-term illness or disability, in Ireland. It explains Irish carer supports, such as Carer's Allowance, the Carer's Support Grant and HSE home support, in plain English, and shows you where to check the details for your own situation.

Who this course is for

  • Adult children, partners and relatives who look after (or are starting to look after) someone at home or nearby
  • Families sharing care between several people, including those who live far away
  • Anyone who is the 'main carer' and wants a plan that does not rely on them alone
  • People preparing for a hospital discharge or a change in someone's needs

Check with a health professional first if

  • This course is about organising care, not about medical treatment. Any changes to medicines, diet for a medical condition, equipment or care routines should be agreed with the person's GP, nurse, pharmacist or care team.
  • If you are worried that someone is in danger, being neglected or harmed, do not wait to finish a plan: call 112 or 999 in an emergency, or report your concern to the HSE safeguarding and protection team for the area (HSE Live on 1800 700 700 can tell you how to reach it).
  • If you are struggling to cope yourself, talk to your own GP or the public health nurse. You do not need to be in crisis to ask for help.

Questions about this course

Do I need a family care plan if the HSE already has a care plan?

Yes, it usually helps. The HSE home support care plan covers the services it arranges. Your family plan covers everything else: who visits when, who handles the shopping and paperwork, the key contacts and what happens if the main carer is ill. Keep both in the same folder.

What if the person I care for does not want a plan?

Start with what matters to them rather than with tasks, and explain that the plan is there to protect their wishes and routines. Most adults have the right to make their own choices. If you are worried about their safety or their ability to decide, talk to their GP or the public health nurse.

Is this course only for people caring for older parents?

No. The same steps work for anyone caring for an adult relative or friend with an illness, disability or long-term condition. The examples include parents, partners and siblings, and the support explained covers the Republic of Ireland.

Will this course tell me what payments we can get?

It explains the main Irish carer payments and supports to check, such as Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit and the Carer's Support Grant, but rules and rates change with each Budget. For a personal answer, contact Citizens Information or the Department of Social Protection, or ask Family Carers Ireland.

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 16 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Family care plan, Roles and rota planner and Key contacts sheet. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: €17.99. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition, using HSE and Irish national guidance.
