About this course

You have probably seen Canada's Food Guide: the plate that is half vegetables and fruits, a quarter whole grain foods and a quarter protein foods, with a glass of water beside it. But how do you turn a picture into what goes on your plate tonight? This short, practical course explains the guide part by part, using Health Canada's own advice and numbers, and shows you how to use it for real meals, real budgets and real family life.

You will learn why the 2019 guide uses proportions instead of servings, how to fill half your plate with vegetables and fruits, why whole grains and fibre matter, why the guide encourages plant-based protein more often, where milk and cheese fit now, how to choose healthy fats, why water is the drink of choice, and how to limit highly processed foods high in sodium, sugars or saturated fat. You will then practice building breakfasts, lunches and dinners, including mixed dishes like curries, stews, stir-fries and sandwiches.

Your toolkit includes a printable food guide plate, a meal balance checker, a hand-portion guide card, a healthier swaps list and a 7-day tracker. It is ideal for anyone who wants a simple, trustworthy starting point for healthier eating.

Questions about this course

Is Canada's Food Guide the same in every province and territory?

Yes. Canada's Food Guide is Health Canada's national healthy eating guide, used across the whole country, in English and French.

Is this course a diet or weight-loss plan?

No. It explains Canada's official healthy eating guide and how to use it for everyday meals. It does not set calorie targets or promise weight loss. If you want to manage your weight, talk to your family doctor or nurse practitioner about the support available.

Does Canada's Food Guide work if I am vegetarian or vegan?

Yes. The guide encourages plant-based protein foods such as beans, lentils, tofu, nuts and seeds, and includes unsweetened fortified soy beverage. Vegans may need to pay extra attention to nutrients such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium and iron; a registered dietitian can help.

Can I use this course to plan my children's meals?

Canada's Food Guide applies to everyone aged 2 and older, so one balanced family meal can work for the whole household. It does not apply to babies and toddlers under 2, who have separate advice on breastfeeding, first foods and milk. The course flags where children's needs are different.
