About this course

You have probably seen the Food Pyramid: the shelves of food on HSE leaflets, classroom walls and safefood posters. But how do you turn a picture into what goes on your plate tonight? This short, practical course explains the pyramid shelf by shelf, using the official servings from the Department of Health's Healthy Eating Guidelines, and shows you how to use it for real meals, real budgets and real family life.

You will learn how many servings to aim for from each shelf, what one serving looks like, why wholemeal cereals and fibre matter, how often to have fish, how to choose milk, yogurt, cheese, spreads and oils, and why top shelf foods are not needed every day. You will then practise building breakfasts, lunches and dinners, including mixed dishes like stews, curries and sandwiches.

Your toolkit includes a printable Food Pyramid, a meal balance checker, a serving size guide card, a healthier swaps list and a 7-day tracker. It is ideal for anyone who wants a simple, trustworthy starting point for healthier eating.

Questions about this course

Is the Food Pyramid used across the whole island of Ireland?

This course covers the Republic of Ireland, where the Department of Health, the HSE and safefood use the Food Pyramid. safefood is an all-island body, but Northern Ireland uses a different healthy eating model, so check local advice if you live there.

Is this course a diet or weight-loss plan?

No. It explains Ireland's official healthy eating guidelines and how to use them for everyday meals. It does not set calorie targets or promise weight loss. If you want to manage your weight, talk to your GP about the support available.

Does the Food Pyramid work if I am vegetarian or vegan?

Yes. The pyramid includes beans, lentils, eggs, nuts, tofu and other non-meat proteins, and you can choose calcium-fortified alternatives to milk and yogurt. Vegans may need to pay extra attention to nutrients such as vitamin B12, iodine and calcium, and the HSE website has more information.

Can I use this course to plan my children's meals?

The main Food Pyramid applies to children from age 5, and older children and teenagers need more servings from the milk, yogurt and cheese shelf. Children aged 1 to 4 have their own Children's Food Pyramid with smaller servings, and babies under 1 follow HSE infant feeding advice. The course flags where children's needs are different, such as full-fat milk for under-2s.

What do I get with this course?

5 modules with 12 short lessons (about 1 hour 10 minutes in total) and 5 interactive tools, including the Printable Food Pyramid, Meal Balance Checker and Serving Size Guide Card. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: €11.99.
