About this course

Chocolate after dinner, crisps in front of the TV, biscuits at 3pm: almost everyone gets food cravings. This short, practical course explains what cravings are, why they happen, and why willpower alone is not the answer.

You will learn to tell hunger from a craving, recognise five common types of craving, and track your own patterns for two weeks. Then you will practise the 10-minute pause, set up your days to keep cravings smaller, and find satisfying swaps that still hit the spot. When you do choose the food you crave, you will learn to enjoy it without guilt.

It is for adults who feel cravings are running the show and want a calmer, kinder way to handle them. It does not involve calorie counting or banning foods. If eating feels out of control, the course points you to your GP and Beat.

Questions about this course

Will this course stop my cravings?

No course can stop cravings completely, and that isn't the aim. Cravings are normal. This course helps you understand why yours happen, make them smaller with simple routines, ride them out when you want to, and enjoy food without guilt when you choose to.

Is this a weight-loss course?

No. It doesn't involve calorie counting or a diet plan. It focuses on understanding cravings and building calmer everyday habits. If you would like to manage your weight, you may find it a helpful first step alongside our weight management courses.

Do cravings mean my body is missing a nutrient?

There is little good evidence that everyday cravings, such as for chocolate or crisps, mean you are short of a nutrient. They are much more often about habit, taste, tiredness and feelings. Craving non-food items such as ice or soil is different, and should be checked by your GP, or your midwife if you are pregnant.

I'm pregnant and getting strong cravings. Can I do this course?

Yes, the general ideas may help, but please follow your midwife's advice on eating in pregnancy and the NHS list of foods to avoid. Tell your midwife if you crave things that are not food.

What do I get with this course?

5 modules with 11 short lessons (about 1 hour 10 minutes in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Craving log, Craving type checker and 10-minute delay cards. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
