About this course

Finding out your child has a food allergy can turn every meal, party and school trip into a worry. This course gives you clear, calm, Irish-based know-how so you feel ready rather than frightened. It follows HSE and Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) guidance and works alongside the advice from your child's GP and allergy team, never instead of it.

You will learn the difference between allergy and intolerance, how to recognise a reaction, and exactly why anaphylaxis always means calling 112 or 999. You will practise reading Irish and EU labels and the 14 allergens, set up an allergy-aware kitchen, and plan for eating out, holidays, parties, creche and school.

Along the way you will build your own printable toolkit: a 14 allergens checklist, a label checking card, an eating-out allergy card, a creche or school information template and an emergency information sheet to share with everyone who looks after your child.

Who this course is for

  • Parents and carers of a baby or child who has been diagnosed with a food allergy
  • Parents waiting for an allergy appointment who want safe, general information in the meantime
  • Grandparents, childminders, family members and friends who look after a child with food allergy
  • Parents of a baby about to start weaning who want to understand the HSE advice on introducing allergens

Check with a health professional first if

  • This course does not diagnose allergies. If you think your child has a food allergy but it has not been confirmed, speak to your GP or public health nurse before cutting foods out of their diet.
  • If your child has been prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors or other allergy medicines, always follow the instructions and allergy action plan from their GP or allergy team. Nothing in this course changes those instructions.
  • If your baby has eczema or a known food allergy, talk to your GP or public health nurse early, before you start weaning, about how to introduce common allergens.
  • If your child avoids several foods, or avoids milk, talk to the GP about a referral to a registered dietitian so their diet still covers everything they need to grow.
  • If your child also has asthma, make sure it is reviewed regularly by their GP or asthma nurse.

Questions about this course

Does this course diagnose my child's allergy or replace the allergy clinic?

No. This course is general education. Diagnosis, testing and treatment must come from your child's GP and allergy team. The course helps you understand and follow their advice day to day.

Will the course tell me how to use an adrenaline auto-injector?

The course explains when anaphylaxis needs a 112 or 999 call and why prescribed auto-injectors should be used without delay, exactly as your child's action plan says. Hands-on training for your child's specific device should come from your GP, pharmacist or allergy nurse.

Is this course right for me if my child's allergy is not yet diagnosed?

Yes, as background information while you wait, but please see your GP before cutting any foods out of your child's diet. Unnecessary avoidance can affect nutrition, and some allergy tests sold online are not reliable.

Is the course specific to Ireland?

Yes. It covers the 14 allergens in Irish and EU law, Irish labelling rules including written allergen information for loose food, FSAI allergen alerts and HSE guidance on recognising reactions and introducing allergens to babies.

What do I get with this course?

7 modules with 19 short lessons (about 2 hours 15 minutes in total) and 6 interactive tools, including the The 14 Allergens Checklist, Label Checking Card and Eating-Out Allergy Card. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Price: €17.99. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition, using HSE and Irish national guidance.
