About this course

Hot flushes and night sweats are the most common symptoms of the perimenopause and menopause. They can strike in meetings, on the school drop-off or at 3am, leaving you flustered, damp and exhausted. This course gives you a practical toolkit to make them easier to live with, based on information from Health New Zealand and the Australasian Menopause Society.

You will keep a two-week trigger diary to find your own patterns, build a 60-second routine for when a flush starts, and set up your clothes, bag, desk and bedroom so cooling is always close at hand. You will plan a cooler evening and night, learn CBT-based skills for the embarrassment and stress that often come with flushes, and find out what the evidence says about soya, herbal remedies and lifestyle changes.

It is for anyone having flushes or sweats around menopause, and for partners who want to help. The final module helps you prepare for a GP appointment and explains the medical options you can ask about, so you can make informed decisions with your doctor.

Questions about this course

Will this course stop my hot flushes?

No course can promise that. This course teaches practical steps based on New Zealand health advice, such as finding triggers, cooling down quickly and setting up a cooler bedroom, that help many people find flushes easier to live with. For medical treatment, talk to your GP.

Is this course suitable if I am taking MHT, or cannot take it?

Yes. The practical steps can be used alongside any treatment your GP recommends, and they are especially useful if MHT is not suitable for you. The course does not advise starting or stopping any medicine.

I am under 45. Can I still take the course?

Yes, but please see your GP first. Health services advise seeing a GP if you have menopause symptoms before 45, so the cause can be checked.

Does the course recommend supplements or herbal remedies?

No. It explains what the evidence shows, which is uncertain, and the safety concerns, including interactions with medicines. It encourages you to check with a pharmacist or GP before trying any product.

What do I get with this course?

7 modules with 21 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Flush trigger diary, Cooling checklist: home, work and out and about and My night-time plan for night sweats, for a one-off NZ$29.99 (GST included). Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate of completion. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
