Baby-led weaning lets your baby feed themselves from the very first meal. It can be a lovely way to share family food, but it only works well when you know how to prepare food safely and what to watch for. This course takes you step by step through readiness, safe shapes and sizes, the difference between gagging and choking, and the first aid steps the NHS describes.
You will learn which first foods to offer, why iron matters from 6 months, how to introduce allergenic foods in finger-food form, and how to turn your family meals into baby-friendly versions without salt or sugar. Printable cards, a first foods tracker, an allergen log and a meal planner help you put it all into practice.
The course is for parents and carers of babies approaching 6 months, and for grandparents, nannies and childminders who help at mealtimes. It follows NHS guidance and is general education, not a replacement for your health visitor.
What baby-led weaning means in practice, how it fits with NHS weaning advice, and how to tell when your baby is really ready for solid food.

Baby-Led Weaning Education, 6 modules, completed 6 October 2026
The NHS says you can start solid foods with finger foods, spoon-fed foods or a mix of both, from around 6 months. This course shows how to do the finger-food approach safely.
Choking can happen with any feeding method. The course focuses on the habits that lower the risk: an upright baby, constant supervision, safe shapes and textures, and your baby putting food in their own mouth.
Yes. Many families do both. Loaded spoons that your baby picks up themselves fit well with baby-led weaning.
It explains the signs of choking and the first steps the NHS describes for babies under 1, but it is not a first aid course. We strongly recommend a practical baby first aid session as well.
6 modules with 16 short lessons (about 2 hours in total) and 6 interactive tools, including the BLW readiness check, BLW safe food shapes and sizes guide and Gagging vs choking card. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
