You may have heard that you should eat more vegetables or choose wholegrain, but what does New Zealand's official advice actually say, and how do you turn it into what goes on your plate tonight? This short, practical course explains New Zealand's Eating and Activity Guidelines food group by food group, using the official servings, and shows you how to use them for real meals, real budgets and real whānau life.
You will learn how many servings of vegetables, fruit, grain foods, milk products and protein foods the guidelines suggest, why wholegrains and fibre matter, what the advice says about red meat, fats, salt, added sugar and alcohol, and why water comes first. You will then practise building breakfasts, lunches and dinners, including mixed dishes like boil-ups, curries, stir-fries and sandwiches.
Your toolkit includes a printable food groups guide, a meal balance checker, a serving size guide card, a healthier swaps list and a 7-day tracker. It is ideal for anyone who wants a simple, trustworthy starting point for healthier eating.
What the guidelines are, who publishes them, who they are for, and how to read the daily servings as a picture of balance over time.

Understanding New Zealand’s Eating and Activity Guidelines, 5 modules, completed 6 October 2026
No. New Zealand's Eating and Activity Guidelines are a set of statements built around four food groups, with suggested servings, plus advice on fats, salt, sugar, water, alcohol, food safety and activity. Plate pictures you may see, such as the Heart Foundation's, can be useful but are not the official guideline.
No. It explains New Zealand's official healthy eating guidelines and how to use them for everyday meals. It does not set kilojoule targets or promise weight loss. If you want to manage your weight, talk to your GP about the support available, such as a Green Prescription.
Yes. The protein food group includes legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs and tofu, and calcium-fortified plant drinks can stand in for milk. Vegans may need to pay extra attention to nutrients such as vitamin B12, iodine, iron and calcium, so talk to your GP or a registered dietitian.
The adult guidelines are for adults. Children and teenagers eat from the same four food groups in servings that suit their age, and babies and toddlers under 2 have their own guidelines. The course flags where children's needs are different, such as full-fat milk for 1 to 2 year olds and no added salt or sugar for young children.
