About this course

Clothes getting tighter, a belt on a new notch, weight that will not shift the way it used to: midlife weight gain is common for both men and women. It is rarely about one thing. Less muscle, less movement, busy working lives, alcohol, poor sleep and stress all add up, a little each year.

This practical course explains why weight and waist change between your 40s and 60s and helps you respond with habits that fit real life. You will measure what matters, set a realistic goal, build balanced midlife-sized meals, get protein at every meal, start a simple home strength routine, and tackle alcohol, sleep and stress. Trackers, planners and a self-check make it practical from week one.

It is for adults of any sex in midlife who want to stop the drift, lose some weight safely if they need to, or simply feel stronger and healthier. It follows UK guidance and points you to your GP and NHS services whenever you need more support. Women in perimenopause or menopause may also like our Menopause and Healthy Weight course.

Questions about this course

Is this course only for women going through the menopause?

No. It is for men and women in midlife. It covers the changes that affect both sexes, such as muscle loss, less movement, alcohol, sleep and stress. Women in perimenopause or menopause may also like our Menopause and Healthy Weight course, which focuses on menopause.

Will I be given a calorie target?

No. The course focuses on balanced, midlife-sized portions, protein, fibre and habits rather than individual calorie targets. If you need a more structured plan, your GP can tell you about NHS programmes and local services.

How much weight will I lose?

We cannot say, and nobody honestly can. Everyone is different. The course explains the gradual rate national guidance describes as safe, and in midlife, stopping the drift and keeping muscle are real successes too.

I take weight-loss medicine. Is this course suitable?

The eating and activity habits in the course can be used alongside weight-loss medicines, but please speak to your prescriber or pharmacist about the medicine itself, including side effects and how it affects your appetite.

What do I get with this course?

7 modules with 18 short lessons (about 2 hours 20 minutes in total) and 6 interactive tools, including the Weight and waist tracker, BMI and waist-to-height calculator and Strength and activity planner. Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
