Starting solid foods is one of the biggest milestones of your baby's first year, and it can feel like there is a lot to get right. This course takes you through first foods step by step, using New Zealand's Healthy Eating Guidelines for Babies and Toddlers, so you know when to start, what to offer and how to keep your pēpi safe.
You will learn the signs that show your baby is ready, set up your kitchen and high chair, and follow a gentle 2-week plan that includes vegetables and iron-rich foods. You will introduce the common allergy-causing foods, including smooth peanut butter and well-cooked egg, one at a time, learn the difference between gagging and choking, and build up to three balanced, iron-rich meals a day by your baby's first birthday.
It is for parents, grandparents, whānau and carers of babies approaching 6 months, and for anyone who has already started and wants a clear plan. If your baby was born early, has eczema or a known allergy, or has feeding or growth concerns, the readiness checker will show you when to talk to your Plunket nurse or GP first.
Learn why New Zealand guidance advises starting solid foods at around 6 months, the signs that show your baby is ready, and the common signs that are often mistaken for readiness.

Starting Solid Foods, 7 modules, completed 6 October 2026
New Zealand guidance is to start solid foods at around 6 months, and not before 4 months, when your baby shows all the signs of readiness. If you are thinking of starting earlier, or your baby was born prematurely, talk to your Plunket nurse or GP first.
Either works, and many families use a mix. You can offer soft finger foods from the start alongside spoon-fed mashed foods. The course shows you how to do both safely.
Yes, but talk to your GP or Plunket nurse before you introduce allergy-causing foods such as egg and peanut. They may want to plan the introductions with you. The course helps you prepare for that conversation.
It explains the difference between gagging and choking and summarises the first aid steps for a choking baby under 1. It is not a replacement for a hands-on baby first aid course with St John or the New Zealand Red Cross, which we recommend you book before you start.
