About this course

You have probably seen the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating: the colourful circle plate on health leaflets, school walls and food packaging. But how do you turn a picture into what goes on your plate tonight? This short, practical course explains the guide food group by food group, using the official Australian serves, and shows you how to use it for real meals, real budgets and real family life.

You will learn what counts as a serve of vegetables and fruit and how to reach "2 and 5", why wholegrain and high-fibre grain foods matter, how much lean meat, fish and legumes to aim for, how to choose milk, yoghurt, cheese and alternatives, how much oil and spread fits, and where discretionary choices sit. You will then practise building breakfasts, lunches and dinners, including mixed dishes like curries, stir-fries, stews and sandwiches.

Your toolkit includes a printable healthy eating plate, a meal balance checker, a hand serve guide card, a healthier swaps list and a 7-day tracker. It is ideal for anyone who wants a simple, trustworthy starting point for healthier eating.

Questions about this course

Are the Australian Dietary Guidelines being updated?

Yes. The NHMRC is reviewing them, with draft guidelines expected to go out for public consultation from late 2026. Until new guidelines are published, the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating remain the official advice, and this course uses them.

Is this course a diet or weight-loss plan?

No. It explains Australia's official healthy eating model and how to use it for everyday meals. It does not set kilojoule targets or promise weight loss. If you want to manage your weight, talk to your GP about the support available.

Does the guide work if I am vegetarian or vegan?

Yes. The guide includes legumes, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds as alternatives to meat, as well as calcium-fortified plant drinks. Vegans may need to pay extra attention to nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, zinc, iodine and calcium, so talk to your GP or an Accredited Practising Dietitian.

Can I use this course to plan my children's meals?

The Australian Dietary Guidelines give serves for children and teenagers by age, from toddlers up, so one family meal can work for everyone with different amounts. Babies under 12 months follow the Infant Feeding Guidelines. The course flags where children's needs are different, such as full-cream milk for under-2s and no added salt or sugar for young children.
