About this course

Whether you are formula feeding from day one, moving from breastfeeding, or combining both, making up a bottle safely is a skill nobody is born with. Powdered formula is not sterile, and small slips, such as an extra scoop or a bottle left out too long, really matter for a young baby.

This short course walks you through the Australian method step by step: choosing a formula without overspending, cleaning and sterilising, preparing feeds with boiled water that has cooled to lukewarm, and handling night feeds, outings and childcare. You will also learn responsive bottle feeding, what is normal with wind, spills and nappies, and how feeding changes up to 12 months.

It is for parents, partners, grandparents and anyone who helps feed a healthy, full-term baby. Printable cards, a sterilising checklist and a feeding log help you build a routine you can share with everyone who cares for your baby.

Questions about this course

Is a more expensive formula better for my baby?

No. All infant formula sold in Australia must meet the same food standards, so a supermarket own-brand standard formula gives your baby the nutrition they need. Price, packaging and words like "premium" do not make one formula healthier than another.

Can I make up bottles in advance to save time?

Preparing each bottle just before the feed is safest. If you need to prepare one in advance, for example for childcare, make it with cooled boiled water, put it in the fridge within 1 hour and use it within 24 hours. The course explains the safe options, including carrying cooled boiled water and pre-measured powder, and ready-to-feed formula.

Does this course tell me exactly how much formula my baby needs?

It gives a general guide and explains how to use the feeding table on your formula tin, but every baby is different. Responsive feeding, wet nappies and weight checks with your child and family health nurse tell you more than any single number.

I am combining breastfeeding and formula. Is this course for me?

Yes. The preparation, sterilising and safety steps are the same. For help with keeping up your breast milk supply alongside formula, talk to your midwife, child and family health nurse or a lactation consultant, or call the Australian Breastfeeding Association Helpline (1800 686 268).

What do I get with this course?

6 modules with 13 short lessons (about 1 hour 10 minutes in total) and 4 interactive tools, including the Step-by-step formula prep card, Cleaning and sterilising checklist and Formula feeding log, for a one-off A$24.99 (GST included). Your tool results save to My Progress. A 10-question final check ends the course; score 7 or more for your certificate of completion. Written by Dr Aqsa Mukhtiar, PhD in Nutrition.
